Guide to Spanish Alcohol-Free Beer: Brands and Where to Find Them

Published May 2026 · 7-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped

Short answer
Spain has one of the most established alcohol-free beer markets in Europe — partly because Spanish drinking culture has long incorporated lower-strength beers, and partly because the category is well regulated and labelled. The major Spanish AF beers fall into three groups: mainstream lager brands (Estrella Galicia, San Miguel, Madri), regional specialists (Ambar, Estrella Levante, Moritz), and modern craft (Basqueland, Free Damm).

Spanish alcohol-free beer doesn't get the UK spotlight it probably deserves. Spain has the most established AF beer culture in Europe — most pubs and bars stock at least one AF lager as a default, and the category benefits from clear labelling regulation. This is a guide to the Spanish AF beer landscape, the major brands, and what each one is known for.

Why Spain has a strong AF beer category

Spain's alcohol-free beer market is one of the most established in Europe. Three factors have driven that. First, Spanish drinking culture has long included low-strength beers — the 'cerveza SIN' segment (literally 'beer without') has been a recognisable category in Spanish supermarkets and bars for decades. Second, regulatory clarity around 0.0% labelling makes consumer expectations easy to set. Third, the major Spanish brewers all produce AF versions of their flagship lagers as standard — meaning AF beer doesn't carry the 'specialist' connotation it has in some UK markets.

That cultural ground also means Spanish AF beer tends to track Spanish beer styles closely. Most Spanish AF beer is lager — pale, mid-amber 'tostada' (toasted), or radler-style fruit lagers. There's less hop-forward craft AF brewing than in the UK or US, but more variety in mainstream lager styles.

The major Spanish AF brands and what they're known for

Estrella Galicia

Galicia-based Estrella Galicia is one of Spain's most-distributed brewers, with strong presence in UK supermarkets and Spanish restaurants. Their AF range includes Estrella Galicia 0.0 (a clean pale lager) and Estrella Galicia Tostada (a toasted-malt amber lager). Both follow the European 0.0% labelling standard. Strong everyday options.

Ambar

Ambar is a Zaragoza brewery dating back to 1900. Their alcohol-free range is broader than most Spanish brewers — Ambar 0.0 Tostada (the most-rated Spanish AF beer in our directory at 7.5/10), Ambar Triple Zero Lager (zero alcohol, zero sugar, zero gluten — uncommon for Spanish AF), and Ambar 0 Radler (a lemon-shandy lager). The Ambar range gives Spanish AF beer more dietary diversity than competitor brands.

San Miguel

San Miguel 0.0 is the alcohol-free version of Spain's most-distributed mainstream lager. Brewed by Mahou-San Miguel (Spain's biggest brewer), San Miguel 0.0 follows the same lager template as the full-strength version — light, clean, easy-drinking. Widely available in UK supermarkets and pubs.

Estrella Levante

Murcia-based Estrella Levante is part of the Heineken Spanish portfolio. Their AF range includes Estrella Levante 0.0 (clean pale lager) and Estrella Levante Tostada (amber). Less internationally distributed than Estrella Galicia but well-regarded within Spain.

Moritz

Moritz is a Catalan brewery from Barcelona, founded 1856. Their alcohol-free product, Aigua de Moritz, is unusual: it's a 0.0% ABV beer-water hybrid — light, crisp, lemon-edged, designed for table drinking with food. Rated 7.3/10 in our directory; among the most-distributed Spanish craft AF beers in the UK.

Basqueland

Basqueland is a Basque Country craft brewery from San Sebastián, founded in 2014. Their alcohol-free Hero range — Hero Hazy IPA and Hero West Coast IPA — represents the modern craft AF approach within Spain. More hop-forward and aromatic than the mainstream Spanish AF lagers, closer in style to UK or US craft AF brewing.

Free Damm

Free Damm is the alcohol-free expression of Damm (the Barcelona-based brewery best known for Estrella Damm). A clean Mediterranean lager profile, low ABV (under 0.5%), wide UK distribution through Spanish restaurants and supermarkets.

Madri Excepcional

Madri Excepcional is a Spanish-inspired lager launched by Coors UK in 2020. Madri 0.0 is the alcohol-free version. It's not strictly Spanish-brewed (production is in the UK and Lisbon), but the branding and flavour profile are designed to evoke Spanish lager culture. Common in UK pubs and supermarkets.

How Spanish AF beer compares to UK and Australian alternatives

Spanish alcohol-free beer is overwhelmingly lager-focused. If you're a lager drinker looking for everyday-drinkable AF options with a Mediterranean character, the Spanish range delivers — Estrella Galicia, Ambar Tostada, Moritz are all credible choices. If you want hop-forward craft AF (IPAs, hazy pales, stouts), Spanish AF beer has fewer options than UK alcohol-free craft. Basqueland Hero is the main exception.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Spanish alcohol-free beer popular?
Spanish drinking culture has long included lower-strength beers (the Cervezas SIN segment has been around for decades), and Spain has clear regulatory categories for 0.0% and below-0.5% beers. Mainstream Spanish brewers all produce alcohol-free versions of their flagship lagers as standard, which has built broad consumer familiarity.
Are Spanish alcohol-free beers vegan and gluten-free?
Most Spanish AF lagers are vegan-friendly. Most are not gluten-free (they use barley malt). Always check individual product labels — Spanish breweries don't always emphasise dietary credentials the way UK and Australian brewers do.
Where can I buy Spanish AF beer in the UK?
Major brands (San Miguel 0.0, Madri Excepcional 0.0, Estrella Galicia 0.0) appear in UK supermarkets and Spanish-themed restaurants. Smaller and craft Spanish AF brands (Ambar, Basqueland, Aigua de Moritz) are more often found at specialist alcohol-free retailers like Dry Drinker.
What's the most-rated Spanish AF beer on Unhopped?
Of the Spanish beers we've rated, Ambar 0.0 Tostada (a toasted-malt amber lager) sits at the top with 7.5/10. Aigua de Moritz follows at 7.3/10. The wider Spanish range is well represented in our directory but most beers haven't yet been rated — full reviews are pending.
Is Madri actually Spanish?
Madri Excepcional was launched in the UK in 2020 by Coors UK as a 'Spanish-inspired' lager. It's brewed in the UK and Lisbon (depending on market), with branding that evokes Madrid. The 0.0 version follows the same model. So culturally Spanish-positioned, but not produced in Spain.
What's the difference between '0.0' and 'tostada' Spanish beers?
'0.0' indicates alcohol-free (technically below 0.05% ABV in Spanish labelling). 'Tostada' (toasted) refers to the malt — a darker, amber-to-brown lager with toasted malt character, typically with a fuller body and slightly sweeter profile than a clear pale lager. Spanish brewers often offer both — for example, Estrella Galicia 0.0 and Estrella Galicia Tostada.
