Privacy Policy
Last updated: 25 July 2026
Unhopped ("we", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal data transparently. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
This policy covers both the Unhopped website and the Unhopped iOS app. Sections below that are specific to one or the other are labelled as such.
Who we are
Unhopped is an independent alcohol-free beer publication based in the United Kingdom. For any privacy question, or to exercise your rights, contact us at richard@unhopped.co.uk. For the purposes of UK GDPR, Unhopped is the data controller for personal data collected through this website and the Unhopped app.
What we collect and why
Newsletter sign-ups. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the email address you provide. We use it only to send you the Unhopped newsletter. The lawful basis is your consent, which you give by submitting the form, and which you can withdraw at any time (see "Your rights" below). Your email address is stored and the newsletter is sent on our behalf by Brevo, an email marketing platform headquartered in France (EU). Our website host, Netlify, passes your submission securely to Brevo and does not retain it.
Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site (for example, which pages are popular) so we can improve it. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information such as your approximate location (from your IP address, which Google truncates), device and browser type, and the pages you view. This data is aggregated and we do not use it to identify you personally. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving our site.
Affiliate tracking. Many of our outbound links to retailers are affiliate links. When you click one, the affiliate network may set a cookie so that any resulting purchase is credited to us and we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We work with the affiliate networks Adtraction and Awin, and their retailer partners. These networks act as independent data controllers for the data they collect through their cookies; we receive only anonymous, aggregated commission reports and never see your payment details or what you personally bought. See our Affiliate Disclosure for more.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. This site uses two kinds: analytics cookies (set by Google Analytics, as above) and affiliate-tracking cookies (set by Adtraction, Awin and their partners only when you click an affiliate link). We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles of you. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time; the site will still work, though some analytics will not be recorded.
Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers that make the website and app function:
- Netlify — website hosting;
- Supabase — app account authentication and database storage;
- Brevo — newsletter storage and delivery (EU-based);
- Google (Google Analytics) — website analytics;
- Adtraction and Awin — affiliate link tracking.
Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy and appropriate safeguards. Some may process data outside the UK; where they do, they rely on recognised safeguards such as UK adequacy regulations or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep newsletter email addresses in Brevo until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, after which they are removed. Every newsletter contains a one-click unsubscribe link. Aggregated analytics data is retained by Google for a limited period in line with our Google Analytics settings. App account data — your ratings, taste profile, badges, quest progress and posts — is kept for as long as your account exists, and is deleted when you delete your account.
The Unhopped app
Your account. To use the Unhopped app you create an account with an email address and password. Accounts are managed by Supabase, our authentication and database provider, which stores your email address and a securely hashed version of your password on our behalf. We use your email address to operate your account (sign-in, password resets) — nothing else. Creating an app account does not subscribe you to the newsletter; that’s a separate, opt-in thing.
What the app stores about you. As you use Unhopped, we store the activity that makes the app work: the beers you’ve rated, loved, or passed on; your taste profile (the app’s picture of your palate — bitterness, citrus, sweetness, malt, body); your taste archetype and level; your quest progress; and anything you post to Digby Tap, our community feed. Content you post to Digby Tap is visible to other Unhopped users. This data is stored with Supabase and is used solely to run the app — personalising your recommendations, showing your profile, and powering community features. We don’t sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it for anything beyond making Unhopped work.
Analytics. The app contains no analytics or tracking software. We don’t measure your behaviour in the app, and we don’t share app data with any third-party analytics provider.
Buying beer. Some beers in the app include a “Buy Now” link. Tapping one opens the website of our retail partner, DryDrinker, in your browser, via an affiliate tracking link provided by Adtraction. From that point you’re on DryDrinker’s site and their privacy policy applies. The affiliate link tells Adtraction that the visit came from Unhopped (so we earn a small commission if you buy something — it costs you nothing extra); it does not send them your Unhopped account details, ratings, or taste profile.
On-device storage. The app keeps some data on your device (such as your sign-in session) so you stay logged in and things load quickly. This stays on your phone and is removed if you delete the app.
Deleting your account. You can delete your Unhopped account and all its data at any time from inside the app: go to Profile, scroll to the bottom, and tap “Delete account”. Deletion is immediate and permanent — it removes your account, ratings, taste profile, badges and posts. If you’d rather not do it yourself, you can email richard@unhopped.co.uk from your account email address and we’ll do it for you within one month.
Who the app is for. Unhopped catalogues alcohol-free and de-alcoholised beer (typically 0.5% ABV or less) and is intended for adults.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, whether from the website or the Unhopped app, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict our processing of it, and to data portability. Where we rely on consent (our newsletter), you can withdraw it at any time — every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, or you can email us.
To exercise any of these rights, email richard@unhopped.co.uk and we will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you have the right to complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.
Children
This site and its products are intended for adults of legal drinking age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.
