Best UK Alcohol-Free Craft Breweries: The Independents Worth Knowing
Published May 2026 · 8-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped
Five years ago, alcohol-free beer in the UK was a wasteland — Heineken 0.0, a few imports, the occasional brewery experiment. Now the UK has eight serious independent alcohol-free breweries, all with distinct identities and distinct strengths. This is a guide to the lot — what each one's known for, what to drink, and where they fit.
How the UK alcohol-free craft scene has matured
The UK has been transformed into one of the most credible alcohol-free brewing markets in the world over the past five years. The driver has been a combination of shifting drinking culture (more mindful drinking, more sober-curious consumers), better brewing technology (specialty yeasts, dealcoholisation methods that preserve flavour), and a wave of independent brewers who took the category seriously rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Eight UK independents now dominate the conversation. Each has a distinct identity and a distinct strength — and between them, they cover most of what serious AF drinkers might want.
Northern Monk — top-tier craft AF
Leeds, founded 2014 by Russ Bisset and Brian Dickson. The Beyond range is the alcohol-free expression of one of the UK's most-respected craft breweries. Holy Faith (hazy pale, 8.8/10) and Heaven AF Chocolate Maple Stout (imperial-style stout, 8.9/10) are at the very top of UK AF brewing. Reimagined Dream Hazy IPA and Beyond New World IPA round out the range. For drinkers who want the same craft quality as Northern Monk's full-strength portfolio, just at <0.5% ABV. Mash Gang — most innovative AF brewing
UK-based, founded by Jordan Childs. Most distinctive for collaborations with full-strength craft brewers — the Mash Gang x Siren Out of Nowhere Pilsner is a notable example. Range covers lagers, hazy pales, IPAs, stouts, and sours, broader than almost any other UK AF brewer. The Lesser Evil Stout (8.5/10) and HAWG Pale Ale are flagships. Big Drop — the original UK AF specialist
Ipswich, founded 2016 by Rob Fink and James Kindred. The most-awarded UK alcohol-free brewery (100+ international awards). Reduced Amylase Brewing process keeps everything below 0.5% ABV without dealcoholisation. Galactic Milk Stout is category-defining; Pine Trail Pale Ale is the everyday workhorse. Jump Ship — Scotland's first dedicated AF brewery
Midlothian, founded December 2019 by Sonja Mitchell. Scotland's only dedicated alcohol-free brewery. Full vegan-and-gluten-free range (rare). Nirvana — UK's only fully-dedicated AF brewery
Leyton, East London, founded 2016/2017 by Becky Kean. UK's only dedicated alcohol-free brewery with its own brewing facility (14-barrel brewhouse). First female-owned UK alcohol-free brand. Lucky Saint — the breakthrough mainstream brand
UK brand (brewed in Bavaria), founded 2018 by Luke Boase. Lucky Saint Unfiltered Lager (8.7/10) was the AF lager that proved the category could compete on flavour. Won Which? 2025 best AF beer.
