Drop Bear Beer Co Review: Wales's Trailblazing Alcohol-Free Brewery
Published May 2026 · 7-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped
Drop Bear is the most genuinely distinctive alcohol-free brewery in the UK. Welsh-born, female-founded, B Corp certified, and carbon-neutral — the values stack up to something more substantial than typical drinks-industry marketing. And the beer is good: bold hop-forward styles plus innovative fruit-cut lagers that nobody else in alcohol-free is making.
Who are Drop Bear?
Drop Bear Beer Co was founded in 2019 in Swansea by Joelle Drummond and Sarah McNena, a married couple frustrated with the limited options available to non-drinkers. What started in Joelle's kitchen has grown into one of the most distinctive — and most awarded — alcohol-free breweries in the UK.
The brewery's identity matters. Drop Bear is the world's first female and LGBTQIA+ founded alcohol-free brewery. Wales's first B Corp brewery. The world's first certified carbon-neutral alcohol-free brewery. Half their employees identify as queer, and the company has a charity partnership with Galop, supporting LGBTQ+ victims of abuse and violence.
These aren't optional decorations — they're the operating principles. And they're paired with serious brewing: World Beer Awards medals across the range, Tesco listings, exports to Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Finland.
What makes Drop Bear different
Sustainability built in from day one
Drop Bear became Wales's first B Corp brewery in 2021, then the world's first certified carbon-neutral AF brewery in 2022. They use 100% renewable energy, lightweight 330ml cans, paperless operations, and verified carbon offsetting (over 1,800 trees planted to date). For drinkers who care about provenance and ethics as much as taste, Drop Bear delivers on both.
Cut Lagers — a Drop Bear invention
The Cut Lager range — Peach Cut, Guava Cut, Pink Grapefruit Cut — is unique to Drop Bear. They're alcohol-free lagers blended with fruit juice or fruit character, sitting in their own category between traditional AF lager and fruit beer territory. Lighter than most AF lagers, refreshingly tart, and genuinely innovative.
Hop-forward and approachable across the range
Beyond the Cut Lagers, Drop Bear's range covers the full hop-forward AF spectrum — Tropical IPA, Yuzu Pale Ale, New World Lager, plus a properly dark Bonfire Stout. The whole range is vegan and gluten-free, which is unusual at this scale.
The Drop Bear range: our top picks
Yuzu Pale Ale (0.5%)
Citrus-forward pale ale brewed with yuzu — Japan's distinctive sour citrus fruit. Bright, aromatic, slightly tart. One of the highest-scoring beers in the Drop Bear range and the kind of beer you can't find anywhere else in alcohol-free.
Tropical IPA (0.5%)
A juicy, tropical-fruit-driven IPA. Mango, papaya, citrus through the middle, moderate bitterness, clean dry finish. Drop Bear's most accessible IPA and a strong everyday option.
Bonfire Stout (0.5%)
Roasted malt, cocoa, light coffee — a properly dark stout that holds up to the Big Drop and Mash Gang competition. Vegan-friendly stout (uncommon — most AF stouts use lactose for body).
Pink Grapefruit Cut Lager (0.5%)
The flagship Cut Lager — pale lager blended with pink grapefruit. Tart, refreshing, summer-day drinking. Distinctive, not gimmicky.
How Drop Bear compares to the wider category
Drop Bear are unique in UK alcohol-free brewing for the combination of full vegan-and-gluten-free range, B Corp certification, and innovative Cut Lager category. On flavour alone they sit in the upper-middle tier — not quite Northern Monk or Big Drop's flagship beers, but consistently strong across a wider range than either.
