Drop Bear Beer Co. is a Welsh alcohol-free brewery making some of the most interesting NA beer in the UK. Founded in Swansea in 2019, they've built a reputation for bold hop-forward styles, genuine craft credentials, and a Great Taste Award–winning range that punches well above its size.
Who are Drop Bear?
Drop Bear was founded in Swansea by Sarah McNena and Joelle Drummond in 2019. Like many of the best alcohol-free breweries, they came at it from a place of frustration — the options available to non-drinkers were poor, and they knew they could do better. Unusually for the category, both founders are women, making Drop Bear one of the few female-founded breweries in British beer.
The brewery has grown rapidly since launch. Drop Bear beers are now stocked across UK supermarkets and online, and the brewery has picked up multiple Great Taste Awards — a serious validation from a programme that doesn't give them out lightly. They're also a certified B Corp, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and ethical business practice.
What makes Drop Bear different?
Welsh craft identity
Drop Bear has leaned into its Welsh heritage and craft independence. The brewery's branding is bold and distinctive, the beers lean toward hoppier and more experimental styles, and there's a clear indie-first ethos that appeals to drinkers bored of mainstream NA options.
Hop-forward range
While many alcohol-free breweries focus on lager or pale ale, Drop Bear's range is unusually hop-forward. Tropical IPAs, New England–style hazies, and punchy pale ales dominate. If you're a craft drinker missing the aroma and bitterness of proper hoppy beer, Drop Bear is where you'll find it.
Ethical credentials
B Corp certification is rare in beer generally, and genuinely rare in alcohol-free beer specifically. Drop Bear's commitment to environmental sustainability and ethical business practice sets them apart from most competitors in the category.
The Drop Bear range: what to try
Drop Bear Tropical IPA (0.5%)
The standout. Mango-forward, vibrantly hoppy, and genuinely exciting. Winner of multiple awards and consistently rated among the best UK alcohol-free IPAs. If you like full-strength hazy or tropical IPAs, this is the Drop Bear beer to try first.
Drop Bear Yuzu Pale Ale (0.5%)
A bright, citrus-forward pale ale infused with yuzu — the Japanese citrus fruit. Light, refreshing, and unusual enough to be genuinely memorable. One of the more distinctive NA beers on the UK market.
Drop Bear New World Lager (0.5%)
For lager drinkers. A clean, easy-drinking lager with a slightly fuller body than most mainstream NA lagers, and a dry finish. Drop Bear's gateway beer for drinkers not ready for the full IPA experience.
Is Drop Bear Beer Co. worth trying?
For craft beer drinkers cutting back, Drop Bear is one of the most rewarding alcohol-free breweries to explore. The range is bolder and more varied than most NA brands, the quality is consistently high, and supporting them means supporting one of the UK's few indie, female-founded, B Corp craft breweries.

Drop Bear Beer Co.: the UK's largest alcohol-free brewery
Drop Bear Beer Co. is an award-winning alcohol-free craft brewery based in Swansea, Wales, and the UK's largest non-alcoholic brewery. Founded in 2019 by wife-and-wife team Joelle and Sarah Drummond, Drop Bear has grown from a small-saucepan home-brewing project in a one-bedroom Mumbles flat into one of the UK's most decorated and ambitious dedicated alcohol-free producers — and the world's first carbon-neutral alcohol-free brewery.
The founding story is closer to craft brewing folklore than corporate marketing. Joelle and Sarah were craft beer drinkers who couldn't find alcohol-free beers that delivered the depth, personality and excitement of the full-strength craft they loved. Rather than wait for someone else to fix the problem, they got to work themselves. Six months of saucepan experiments later, Drop Bear was born. The brewery has since grown into one of the UK's fastest-growing alcohol-free producers, with beers stocked nationwide and abroad, more than 40 awards to its name, and recognition as European Champions of low/no brewing at the 2021 European Beer Challenge.
How Drop Bear brews
Drop Bear's brewing philosophy is straightforward: brew beers that stand head-to-head with full-strength craft. Every Drop Bear beer is brewed for flavour first, with a focus on distinctive, hop-forward styles using high-quality, all-natural ingredients. The brewery operates from a purpose-built site that was originally a real-ale brewery for over two decades before Joelle and Sarah acquired it in 2023. The brewery is electric-powered and has been engineered with structural innovations for energy reduction.
The range
Drop Bear's core lineup spans the modern craft palette. New World Lager covers the classic lager territory; Yuzu Pale Ale brings a citrus-forward twist that's become one of the brewery's signature beers; Tropical IPA is the hop-forward flagship; and Bonfire Stout covers the dark-beer end of the range. The brewery also produces fruited variants including pink grapefruit, raspberry, peach and guava editions, giving drinkers a strong sense of stylistic playfulness alongside the more traditional core beers.
Sustainability and values
Drop Bear's sustainability credentials are substantial and properly verified rather than performative. The brewery has been B-Corp certified since 2021 and is the world's first carbon-neutral alcohol-free brewer — a status earned through a 2022 carbon-footprint analysis with Climate Partner that audited every emission from day one of operations. The brewery has supported more than 60 environmental projects globally and planted over 2,300 trees through carbon-offset partnerships. Drop Bear is also a vocal supporter of LGBTQIA+ rights, partnering with Galop in the fight against violence toward LGBTQIA+ communities.
Why Drop Bear matters
Drop Bear sits at one of the most interesting intersections in modern UK alcohol-free brewing. It's the country's largest dedicated alcohol-free brewery — at a scale that makes serious craft economics work. It's a values-led business with B-Corp certification, carbon-neutral status and an active social conscience. And it's run by founders who entered the category because they wanted better beer to drink themselves. For drinkers exploring the UK alcohol-free category, Drop Bear is a brewery whose range deserves deliberate attention — especially the Yuzu Pale Ale, which sits among the most distinctive alcohol-free beers being made anywhere in the UK.
