Stout & Chocolate: The Ultimate Alcohol-Free Pairing
Published July 2026 · 5-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped

If there’s one pairing that converts people to beer-and-chocolate, it’s stout. Alcohol-free stouts have come a long way — many now taste of fudge, cocoa, coffee and pudding — and that makes them a dream match for a good bar. Here are the dark-beer pairings we reach for most.

Why stout and chocolate work so well
Stout is brewed with heavily roasted malt, and that roasting produces the exact same family of flavours you find in chocolate and coffee: bitter-sweet, toasty, a little caramelised. Put the two together and they don’t clash — they harmonise, each making the other taste deeper. A touch of sweetness in the chocolate also softens any roasty bitterness in the beer, which is why dessert-style stouts and sweeter bars are such a reliable match.
1. Fudge stout × NOMO Fudge Filled Bars
The purest expression of the idea: fudge on fudge. Hammerton Fudge City Stout already drinks like liquid chocolate-fudge cake, so a soft-centred fudge bar simply doubles the effect. Pure pudding, no alcohol.

2. Peanut & milk stouts × Creamy + Cookie Dough
Sweeter, rounder stouts want creamier chocolate. Hammerton CRUNCH AF Peanut Butter Stout — roasted malt, chocolate and smooth peanut — leans into a cookie-dough bar’s doughy sweetness, while Big Drop Galactic Milk Stout (a gold-medal milk stout) is made for the silky creamy bars. The bundle gives you both, so you can pour two stouts and run a tasting.

3. Chocolate-maple & imperial stouts × more of the bundle
For the big hitters, keep the chocolate rich. Northern Monk Heaven AF Chocolate Maple Stout brings chocolate and maple depth inspired by its barrel-aged namesake, and Omnipollo Noa Pecan Mud Cake Stout layers pecan, chocolate and caramel into a proper dessert in a glass. Both love a creamy or cookie-dough square alongside.

More dark beers that pair beautifully: Omnipollo Noa Pecan Mud Cake, Nirvana Chocolate Milk Stout, Wiper & True Milkshake Stout and Nittenauer Lola Coffee Porter (espresso and dark chocolate). Find them all in our best alcohol-free stout guide.
One honest note on ‘milk’ stouts
A quick heads-up if you’re dairy-free: several of these are milk stouts, which means they’re brewed with lactose (milk sugar) for sweetness and body. Big Drop’s Galactic Milk Stout is one — delicious, but not vegan. The NOMO chocolate is always vegan and dairy-free; if you need the beer to be too, choose a non-milk stout like Athletic All Out Stout, and see our vegan beer & chocolate guide.
The single best match for a fudge or milk stout — giant vegan bars, molten fudge centre. From around £24 for six.
