Alcohol-Free Beer & Chocolate Pairings
Published July 2026 · 6-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped

Beer and chocolate is one of the great underrated pairings — and going alcohol-free changes none of what makes it work. Whether you’re winding down on a Friday, building a giftable treat box, or just fancy pudding with your pint, here’s how to match an AF beer with the right chocolate, bar by bar.

Does alcohol-free beer go with chocolate?
Yes — and the logic is the same as pairing wine or full-strength beer with chocolate. Dark, roasty beers share a flavour family with cocoa: the toasted malt in a stout picks up the same bitter-sweet, chocolate-and-coffee notes you get in a good bar, so the two reinforce each other. Lighter, crisper beers do the opposite job — their carbonation and clean finish cut through sweetness and salt, resetting your palate between bites. The alcohol was never doing the pairing; the malt, roast and carbonation were, and those are all present at 0.0 to 0.5 percent.
Below are four pairings we keep coming back to. The chocolate is all NOMO — the UK’s no. 1 vegan and free-from chocolate brand — so the chocolate in every pairing is vegan and dairy-free. (The beers themselves vary: most AF beer is vegan, but milk stouts like Big Drop Galactic contain lactose.)
1. Fudge stout × NOMO Fudge Filled Bars
The most natural match on the list: fudge on fudge. Hammerton Fudge City Stout already tastes of rich chocolate fudge cake, so a bar with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth fudge centre doesn’t fight it — it doubles down. Sip, bite, and let the two blur into one dessert. It’s an indulgent, unapologetic pairing for the end of an evening.

2. Peanut & milk stout × Creamy + Cookie Dough Bundle
For roasty stouts with a sweeter edge, reach for creamier chocolate. Hammerton CRUNCH AF Peanut Butter Stout brings roasted malt, chocolate and smooth peanut — a cookie-dough bar leans right into that nutty, doughy sweetness. Prefer something rounder? Big Drop Galactic Milk Stout, a gold-medal-winning milk stout, is made for NOMO’s silky creamy bars. The bundle gives you both flavours, so you can pour two different stouts and run your own tasting.

3. Crisp lager × NOMO Salted Popcorn Bars
This one’s a contrast pairing. NOMO’s salted popcorn bars are sweet, salty and crunchy all at once — a lot going on — so you want a beer that cleans up rather than piles on. A clean, chilled Big Drop Reef Point Lager does exactly that: its crisp carbonation resets your palate between bites so the chocolate stays moreish instead of cloying. Cinema-snack energy, entirely alcohol-free.

4. Tropical hazy pale × the Mixed Box
Not every pairing has to be dark. A juicy, fruit-forward pale like Heaps Normal Half Day Hazy — all tropical sunshine — plays surprisingly well against fruitier, lighter chocolate. The easiest way in is NOMO’s Mixed Chocolate Box: ten bars across five flavours (creamy, cookie dough, caramel, salted popcorn and fruit & crunch), so you can work down a flight of beers and find your own favourite match. It’s also small enough to post, which makes it the obvious giftable pick.

New to NOMO? Start with the Mixed Box
If you’re not sure where to begin, the Mixed Chocolate Box is the one to buy. At around £14.99 for ten bars across all five flavours, it’s the cheapest way to taste the range, the easiest to pair across a few different beers, and — because it’s letterbox-friendly — a genuinely good gift for the sober-curious chocolate lover in your life. Find a favourite, then trade up to a single-flavour box or a bundle.
Ten vegan bars, five flavours — taster box and giftable treat in one. Around £14.99.

Part of what we like about pairing with NOMO is that nobody has to sit it out. NOMO says its chocolate is certified vegan and made free from dairy, gluten, egg and nuts — the brand exists precisely so people with an allergy or a plant-based diet aren’t left staring at a chocolate aisle they can’t touch (NOMO, aptly, stands for “no missing out”). Pair it with a 0.0–0.5% beer and you’ve got a treat that works for the designated driver, the sober-curious and the allergy-conscious alike. One sensible caveat: allergen recipes and factory lines can change, so always check the current pack labelling before buying, especially if it’s for someone with a serious allergy.
Build a beer & chocolate tasting night
Want to make an evening of it? Line up three beers — a crisp lager, a hazy pale and a rich stout — and a few NOMO bars, and taste in that order, light to dark. Pour small measures, nibble a square between sips, and note what lifts and what clashes. It’s a lovely low-key thing to do with someone, and a brilliant centrepiece for a night in. Need beers?
