The story behind Rothaus Pils

Rothaus is German beer’s great cult story: founded in 1791 by the Benedictine monks of St Blasien, owned to this day by the state of Baden-Württemberg, and perched at around 1,000 metres in the southern Black Forest — Germany’s highest brewery. Its Tannenzäpfle pilsner became a nationwide cult with barely any advertising, on the strength of Black Forest spring water and word of mouth.

The brewery only entered alcohol-free in 2009, once its brewers had a de-alcoholisation method — which Rothaus says remains unique in Germany — that removes the alcohol without stripping the flavour. This 0.5% pils is the result: crisp, clean, properly bitter.

Serve it very cold in a slim stange or pils glass, and treat it like the original — a beer for evenings that need three of them. Full brewery story on our Rothaus hub; German rivals ranked in the German round-up.

Is Rothaus Pils really alcohol-free at 0.5%?
Rothaus Pils is 0.5% ABV. Under UK labelling that's classed as de-alcoholised/low alcohol rather than strictly 'alcohol free' — though 0.5% is comparable to the trace alcohol found naturally in ripe fruit or fresh orange juice. We explain the difference in our 0.0% vs 0.5% guide.
