The story behind Rothaus Hefe Weizen

From Germany’s highest brewery — the state-owned, monastery-founded Rothaus of the southern Black Forest — comes the wheat-beer half of the alcohol-free Zäpfle family. Rothaus first bottled a Hefeweizen in 1995; the alkoholfrei versions followed in 2009, once the brewery’s famously perfectionist brewers had a de-alcoholisation process they trusted with the house flavour.

It shows: hazy gold, soft banana and clove, the plush body wheat-beer drinkers actually miss when they go alcohol-free — brewed with the same seven-spring Black Forest water as the cult Tannenzäpfle.

Pour it tall with a final swirl of the bottle to rouse the yeast, and pair with brunch, grilled fish or a post-hike sit-down — the very German use-case. More on the Rothaus hub and in our German guide. The label girl ‘Biergit’ — a Black Forest icon since 1956 — watches over this one too.
