The story behind Nillis

Nillis is a piece of brewing history: the world’s first alcohol-free Trappist beer, launched in 2021 by the monks of Koningshoeven Abbey near Tilburg — who have brewed within the abbey walls since 1884 — to mark the monastery’s 140th anniversary. The name plays on the Latin nihil (nothing) and nods to the river Nile, whose source lies in Uganda, home of the abbey’s daughter monastery; part of the proceeds funds the brothers’ projects there.

In the glass it’s dark amber and malt-led — caramel sweetness, fruity yeast character and a gentle bitterness — and it took Gold at the 2022 Dutch Beer Challenge. If you want one bottle that proves alcohol-free can be genuinely special, this is it. More context on our La Trappe hub and in our Dutch alcohol-free guide.

Serve it like the Trappist it is: a stemmed goblet, not too cold (10–12°C lets the malt open up), alongside cheese, roast meats or a slab of dark chocolate. At 40 kcal it’s also one of the more sessionable ‘special occasion’ beers you’ll find — a rare combination.
