La Trappe: the abbey that brewed a world first
La Trappe is the beer of Koningshoeven Abbey near Tilburg in the Netherlands, where Trappist monks have brewed since 1884 to support their monastery — one of the very few authentic Trappist producers in the world, brewing within the abbey walls under the monks’ supervision.
In 2021, for the abbey’s 140th anniversary, the brothers did something no Trappist brewery had ever done: they released La Trappe Nillis, the world’s first alcohol-free Trappist beer. The name plays on the Latin nihil (nothing) and nods to the river Nile, whose source lies in Uganda — home of the abbey’s daughter monastery, Our Lady of Victoria, whose projects receive part of the proceeds. It took Gold at the 2022 Dutch Beer Challenge, and it proved that centuries of monastic brewing tradition and modern alcohol-free innovation aren’t opposites.
Koningshoeven itself dates to 1881, founded by French Trappists seeking refuge in the Netherlands, and the brewery remains the abbey’s main livelihood — every bottle of Nillis funds the same quiet monastic life it has for 140 years. The abbey has since extended the idea with further low-alcohol releases, treating ‘less’ as a craft of its own.
