The story behind Erdinger Alkoholfrei
Erdinger Weißbräu of Erding, Bavaria — founded 1886, one of the world’s great wheat-beer specialists — launched its Alkoholfrei in 2001 and, more than any single beer, invented the ‘finish-line beer’: isotonic, vitamin-marketed, handed out by the crate at German marathons and triathlons. For a generation of European runners, this is the recovery drink.
It’s a proper Weissbier underneath the sports pitch: hazy gold, gentle banana-and-clove, soft carbonation, satisfying body at around 0.5% — the beer that proved alcohol-free could have a positive identity rather than an apologetic one.
Serve it tall after exercise (the intended ritual) or with brunch; either way, pour with a head. Rivals ranked in our German guide; more on the Erdinger hub. If one bottle explains why Germany leads the world in alcohol-free beer per head, it’s this one. It even sponsors athletes and endurance events outright — a beer brand with a sports-marketing budget, which still feels quietly revolutionary.
