Tasting notes and what to expect

Heineken 0.0 is the most widely-distributed alcohol-free beer in the world and the AF benchmark for drinkers transitioning from mainstream lagers. It's brewed at full strength then dealcoholised using vacuum distillation, a low-temperature process that preserves more of the original beer's flavour compounds than thermal alcohol-removal.

Appearance and aroma: Pale straw, brilliantly clear, with a quick-dropping white head. Aroma is light malt with a grain-husk character — recognisably Heineken in profile, just less intense. The slight "AF-beer" note (some describe it as wort-like or apple-juice-like) is present but minimal.

Palate and finish: Light body, gentle malt sweetness up front, mild hop bitterness in the middle, finishing clean and short. The body is the giveaway — Heineken 0.0 is thinner than the full-strength version because much of the body in regular Heineken comes from alcohol itself. Drink cold from the fridge; warmer than that, the gap to the full-strength version becomes more obvious.

Food pairings: Works with anything you'd drink a mainstream lager with — pizza, pub burgers, takeaway, light pasta dishes. Particularly good as a thirst-quencher in warm weather where the lighter body is an asset rather than a limitation.

How it compares: Lighter and crisper than Lucky Saint Unfiltered Lager — Heineken 0.0 is closer to pilsner territory while Lucky Saint sits in Kellerbier territory. Cleaner than most supermarket AF own-brand lagers. The AF lager that pubs are most likely to have on draught. See our alcohol-free lager hub for the wider category, or the Heineken brewery page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Heineken 0.0 actually 0.0% alcohol?
Heineken 0.0 is brewed to 0.0% ABV using a process that brews a normal-strength beer and then removes the alcohol via vacuum distillation. In practical terms it sits below 0.05% ABV — within the strictest global threshold for "alcohol-free" labelling. For context on what 0.0% versus 0.5% means, see our 0.0% vs 0.5% explainer.
How many calories are in Heineken 0.0?
21 kcal per 330ml — among the lowest in the AF beer category. The light body comes from the alcohol removal: Heineken 0.0 has very little residual sugar or unfermented malt left over, which is why it's calorie-low but also why some drinkers find it lighter than they'd like.
Is Heineken 0.0 vegan?
Heineken state that Heineken 0.0 is suitable for vegans — the brewing process avoids animal-derived fining agents. Most of Heineken's main range is also vegan-friendly.
Where can I buy Heineken 0.0?
Almost everywhere alcohol-free beer is sold in the UK. Major supermarkets, corner shops, pub draught lines (it's the most-stocked AF draught beer in the country), restaurants, hotels, and online retailers. If a venue serves AF beer at all, Heineken 0.0 is the most likely option to be available.
