Tasting notes and what to expect

Punk AF is the alcohol-free version of BrewDog's flagship Punk IPA — the beer that arguably defined modern UK craft. The recipe was adapted from the full-strength original (5.4% ABV) using a brewing process designed specifically to preserve the citrus-and-tropical hop character that makes Punk what it is.

Appearance and aroma: Hazy golden, white foamy head, vivid hop aroma — grapefruit, passion fruit, pine resin, a hint of caramel malt. The aroma is the closest of any UK supermarket AF beer to its full-strength namesake; if you put Punk AF and full-strength Punk IPA next to each other blind on aroma alone, the gap is small.

Palate and finish: Medium body (better than most AF IPAs), defined citrus and tropical fruit hop flavours, moderate-to-high bitterness, finishing dry with a clean hop bite. The body is where Punk AF makes its strongest case — most AF IPAs feel thin in the mouth, but Punk AF carries noticeable malt structure. Best served well-chilled.

Food pairings: Strong with classic IPA pairings — burgers, ribs, spicy chicken wings, Indian curries, mature cheeses, fish tacos. The hop character cuts through richer foods cleanly.

How it compares: Hoppier and bitterer than soft AF hazies like Lucky Saint Hazy IPA. Closer in profile to Athletic Run Wild but with more aggressive bitterness. Less hop-extreme than Nanny State. The AF beer most often cited by craft drinkers as "the one that actually tastes like real beer". See the alcohol-free IPA hub or the BrewDog brewery page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Punk AF the same as Punk IPA?
It's a closely-related but separate recipe. Punk AF was developed to track the flavour profile of Punk IPA (5.4% ABV) at 0.5% ABV. The hop character is recognisably Punk, but the body and finish are lighter. BrewDog position it as an alcohol-free version of Punk rather than a different beer that shares the name.
How many calories are in Punk AF?
35 kcal per 330ml — moderate for the AF IPA category. AF IPAs tend to run higher than AF lagers because the fuller body and residual malt that give IPAs their character also carry more calories. Compare specific beers in our calorie calculator.
Is Punk AF vegan?
Punk AF is not vegan — the recipe contains lactose (milk sugar), as listed in BrewDog's official UK ingredients (water, lactose, malted barley, hops, yeast, malted wheat, malted oats, lactic acid). It's also not suitable for anyone avoiding dairy or with lactose intolerance. BrewDog's Nanny State, by contrast, does not contain lactose.
What's the best AF IPA in the UK?
It's a contested category and the answer depends on what you want. Punk AF is the AF IPA most likely to satisfy a Punk IPA drinker. Athletic Run Wild is the cleanest West-Coast-style AF IPA. Northern Monk Holy Faith and Lucky Saint Hazy IPA dominate the soft hazy end. Nanny State is the hoppy session pick. Browse the full IPA hub for our complete ranking.
