Super Bock: Portugal’s beer, engineered alcohol-free
Super Bock is the best-selling Portuguese beer in the world. The brand launched in 1927 in Porto — it won a gold medal at the city’s Palácio de Cristal industrial exhibition before it was even a registered trademark — and its parent, the Super Bock Group of Leça do Balio, traces back to 1890 and is Portugal’s largest beverage company.
Its alcohol-free credentials are unusually scientific: Super Bock entered the NA segment in 2005 and developed its de-alcoholisation process in partnership with the University of Porto’s Faculty of Engineering — the beers are fully fermented, then the alcohol is removed, preserving the character. It leads Portugal’s alcohol-free market, and during the pandemic the removed alcohol was even turned into sanitiser gel for hospitals.
The brand’s trophy cabinet is absurd by any standard — dozens of Monde Selection gold medals across the decades — and its alcohol-free beers travel surprisingly well: the 0.0 exports as far as the Middle East, where de-alcoholised beer built on a fully fermented base is a genuine differentiator.
Super Bock on Unhopped
We list the crisp, 22-kcal Super Bock Pilsner (a true 0.0) and the Super Bock Stout — a dark, roasty, coffee-and-chocolate stout that’s a rarity among mainstream AF brands and a great gateway into darker alcohol-free styles.
