How to Host an Alcohol-Free Beer Tasting at Home
The fastest way to find alcohol-free beers you actually love isn't reading reviews — it's lining up twelve beers, pouring small, and arguing about them with friends. A tasting night costs less than a round in town, works brilliantly as a Sober October centrepiece, and by the end of the evening everyone has a personal top three they didn't have at the start. Here's the exact format we use, from pour order to scoring.
The format: four flights, light to dark
Structure beats freestyle. Four flights of three beers gives the night a shape, keeps palates fresh, and makes the comparisons meaningful — you're always judging like against like. Here's a ready-made line-up drawn from our top-rated beers:

Pours and glassware. 100ml per beer, one small stemmed glass per person, rinse between flights. A 330ml can serves three tasters — so twelve beers runs a four-person night with a splash spare.
Temperature. Chill flights one and two hard (4–6°C). Let flight three sit five minutes out of the fridge, and flight four ten — dark beers hide their best flavours when they're ice cold.
Blind or open? Blind is funnier. Bag the cans, number them, reveal at the end — supermarket lagers regularly embarrass premium craft, and that's half the entertainment.
Scoring. Aroma, taste, finish, one score out of ten — or do it properly in the Unhopped app and end the night with a shared leaderboard and a saved list of winners.
The snack flight (yes, really)
Salty snacks between flights do two jobs: they reset the palate and they keep the night moving. Better still, run them as a flight of their own — Cool Hog's taster package is ten flavours of pork scratching, which pairs one-to-one with the beers like a parallel tasting:
Cool Hog 10-Flavour Taster Package
Ten flavours of hand-cooked scratchings — deal one per taster per flight and score those too. The dark-flight pairing with a milk stout is genuinely great.

Stock the night in one order
A curated case is the zero-effort route: our assortment box guide ranks eleven, from an all-rounder Can Can pack to a 14-bottle single-brewery Discovery Pack from Nirvana. Prefer to hand-pick? The crate builder assembles your twelve from the whole directory.

How many beers do I need for an alcohol-free tasting night?
Twelve covers four flights of three with 100ml pours — one mixed case does it in a single order, or build your own dozen with the crate builder. A 330ml can pours three tasting measures, so twelve beers comfortably serves four people.
What order should we taste in?
Light to dark, clean to loud: crisp lagers first, then hop-forward pales and IPAs, then fruit and sour styles, and dark beers last — a stout will flatten anything that follows it. Chill lagers hard and let the dark flight warm slightly; roast flavours open up around 10–12°C.
How should we score the beers?
Keep it simple: appearance, aroma, taste, finish — then one score out of ten. Or use the Unhopped app, which scores on the axes we use across this site (bitterness, citrus, sweetness, malt, body) and saves every rating so the night ends with a shared leaderboard.
Is this a good Sober October activity?
It's the best one. A tasting night turns the month from abstaining into exploring, it's cheap to host, and everyone leaves with a new favourite. Time it for one of October's Friday pressure points — our Sober October guide maps them.
