Nirvana Brewery: the UK's first dedicated alcohol-free brewery

Nirvana Brewery was the first brewery in the UK to dedicate itself entirely to alcohol-free beer. Founded in East London in 2016 by Becky and her family, Nirvana was built around a simple proposition: that no one should have to miss out on great beer because they can't or don't want to drink alcohol. A decade on, the brewery has become one of the most awarded alcohol-free producers in the UK and a defining presence in the British no-and-low movement.

The brewery is based in the heart of East London, where it has spent ten years refining what alcohol-free brewing can be. Where many UK breweries treat alcohol-free as an extension of their full-strength range, Nirvana was designed from the outset to do this one thing well — every recipe, every process decision, every ingredient choice oriented around the constraints and opportunities of the format.

How Nirvana brews

Brewing genuinely good alcohol-free beer is both an art and a science, and Nirvana's approach reflects that. The brewery's lead brewer, James Rabagliati, is among the most experienced specialists in the UK alcohol-free space, and the recipes have been developed and refined over years rather than months.

Nirvana's beers stay true to classic craft brewing principles, using just four core ingredients: malt, hops, water and yeast. The technical challenge is keeping the finished beer below 0.5% ABV while retaining full flavour, and Nirvana achieves this through a combination of precise process control and specially developed yeast strains. For their German-style range, the brewery uses vacuum distillation — a technique that gently extracts alcohol at low temperature without damaging the delicate flavour compounds that define the underlying styles.

The range

Nirvana's range covers an unusually broad stylistic spread for a dedicated alcohol-free brewery. The lager line includes Nirvana Pils (0.5%), Nirvana Helles (0.3%) and the distinctive Cloudy Lemon Lager (0.2%). The British ale tradition is represented by Nirvana Best (0.5%), a classic best bitter, alongside the darker Nirvana Stout Dark & Smooth (0.5%) and Mocha Porter (0.5%). Nirvana IPA (0.5%) covers the modern hop-forward end of the range. The Discovery Mixed Case offers a structured way in for new drinkers.

Sustainability and responsibility

Sustainability is built into how Nirvana operates rather than treated as a marketing exercise. The brewery works with suppliers committed to environmentally responsible practices, sources locally grown ingredients and water where possible, and powers its operations with renewable energy. In 2026, Nirvana is championing British hops to reduce its carbon footprint and is officially on track to become a B-Corp certified business.

Why Nirvana matters

Nirvana sits at the intersection of three important things in modern UK alcohol-free brewing. It's a true category pioneer with a decade of accumulated expertise. It's a serious craft producer brewing across the full stylistic spread of British and continental beer. And it's a values-driven business building toward B-Corp certification. For drinkers exploring the UK alcohol-free category, Nirvana is one of the breweries whose range deserves systematic attention rather than incidental sampling.
