Nirvana Brewery: the brewery that started it all

Nirvana Brewery holds a genuine claim to a first: it was the earliest brewery in Britain to dedicate itself entirely to alcohol-free beer. Founded in 2016 by Steve Dass and Becky Kean and based in Leyton, East London, Nirvana didn't add a token 0.5% to an existing line-up — it built the whole operation around the idea that no one should have to miss out on a good beer because they can't or don't want to drink alcohol. How Nirvana brews

Making genuinely good alcohol-free beer is equal parts art and engineering, and Nirvana uses two methods depending on the style. For most of the range it relies on arrested fermentation — precise process control paired with specially developed yeast strains that keep the finished beer at or below 0.5% ABV while holding on to flavour. For its cleaner, German-influenced lagers it uses vacuum distillation, gently lifting the alcohol out at low temperature so the delicate aromatics that define those styles survive intact. The head brewer, James Rabagliati, is one of the most experienced specialists working in UK alcohol-free beer, and the recipes have been refined over years rather than months.

The range

Nirvana brews one of the broadest stylistic spreads of any dedicated alcohol-free brewery in the country. At the top of our ratings sits the hop-forward West Coast IPA (8.1/10), with the roasty Smooth & Dark stout (7.9) close behind. Nirvana is a certified B Corporation — a standard that looks at a company's whole social and environmental footprint, not just its beer. In practice that means working with environmentally responsible suppliers, sourcing locally where it can, and powering the brewery on renewable energy; more recently it has leaned into British-grown hops to cut the carbon miles in each batch.
