Brew Zero is a free browser game where you run your own alcohol-free brewery — from forty cases in a lock-up to a cult name, if the rent doesn’t get you first. No download, no sign-up, and it saves as you go. Go and have a play, then come back and read why we built it.

We spend most of our time here reviewing alcohol-free beer — 220-odd of them and counting. So this is a slight departure. We built a game.

It is called Brew Zero, it lives at unhopped.co.uk/brew-zero, and it puts you on the other side of the bar: instead of drinking the stuff, you make it. Badly, at first. Then, if you read the ingredient guide and price your cans with any sense, rather well.

What Brew Zero actually is

It is a brewery tycoon game, played entirely in your browser. You start with £500, a stockpot, a lock-up with the rent due weekly, and a theory that alcohol-free beer doesn’t have to be terrible. From there it is the eternal small-brewery balancing act: brew something people want, price it so it sells without bankrupting you, and stay ahead of the overheads.

It runs on any phone or laptop, it is free, and there is nothing to install or sign up for. Your brewery saves itself in your browser as you play, so you can wander off mid-batch and pick it up later. The brewery cat is called Saaz. That is the level of research we have put in.

How to play, in four moves

Pick a style, pick your ingredients

Start with a lager and three ingredients — some combinations sing, some taste like a wet cardboard tribute act. The ingredient guide tells you what shines where; you unlock IPAs, wheat beers and stouts as your reputation grows.

Brew it, can it, price it

Your batch ferments, moves to the cold store, and sells through your canning line. Price it too high and the demand collapses; too low and the rent eats you. There is a right number and finding it is most of the game.

Survive the rent

Rent ticks every game-week whether you sell a can or not. Go far enough into overdraft and the receivers arrive. The drain drinks free either way.

Upgrade, and chase the awards

Bigger kit, a proper dealcoholiser, a quality lab to stop infections. Build a reputation, top the weekly leaderboard, and export a share card of your brewery to show off.

Why an alcohol-free brewery game?

Two reasons, one obvious and one less so.

The obvious one: the actual alcohol-free beer scene is the best it has ever been, and most people still picture a warm, sweet lager from 2009. A game that lets you fiddle with recipes, styles and dealcoholising kit is a sneaky way to show how much craft now goes into a decent 0.0% — the same craft we bang on about in how alcohol-free beer is made and why some alcohol-free beers taste so much better than others. In the game, yes, there is a dealcoholiser upgrade. It matters. Just like real life.

The less obvious one is a design choice we care about a lot. Brew Zero has no punishments for leaving. No streaks that break if you miss a day, no timers counting down while you sleep, no notifications nagging you back. Rent only ticks while you are actually playing; the leaderboard resets every week so missing one costs you nothing. A chunk of our audience is actively moderating their drinking, and the last thing that crowd needs is another app engineered to make stepping away feel like failure. Rewards for coming back, never penalties for leaving. It seemed like the only honest way to build it.

The real beers behind the game

Every style you brew in Brew Zero is one you can actually drink tonight. Will I lose my brewery if I close the tab?

No. The game saves your progress in your own browser as you play, so you can close the tab and come back to exactly where you left off. Clearing your browser data would reset it, but ordinary closing and reopening is safe.
