Moritz: Barcelona's original beer
Cerveses Moritz is Barcelona's oldest beer brand, founded in 1856 by Louis Moritz, an Alsatian immigrant who became the first person to brew beer industrially in Spain.
On Unhopped, Moritz is represented by Aigua de Moritz, the brewery's alcohol-free beer at 0.0% ABV.
Barcelona's first beer
Louis Moritz Trautmann arrived in Barcelona from Alsace and, in 1856, began brewing his own beer — establishing what is considered Spain's first industrial brewery, at the now-iconic site on Ronda Sant Antoni. Moritz became the leading beer in Barcelona by the late 19th century.
Closure and revival
The brewery closed in 1978 amid the energy crisis, but Louis Moritz's descendants relaunched the brand in 2004. The historic Fàbrica Moritz, redesigned by architect Jean Nouvel, reopened as a brewery, restaurant and Barcelona landmark.
The alcohol-free Moritz
Aigua de Moritz (‘Moritz Water’) is the brewery's alcohol-free beer at 0.0% ABV — a light, refreshing take on its Mediterranean pilsner style.
Why Moritz matters
As Barcelona's original beer with a genuine 19th-century pedigree, Moritz brings real Spanish brewing heritage to the alcohol-free shelf. See also our best Spanish alcohol-free beer guide.
