Amundsen: Oslo’s biggest craft brewery goes alcohol-free
Amundsen Bryggeri started life in 2011 as a five-hectolitre brewpub in Oslo and has grown into the city’s largest brewery — one of Norway’s fastest-growing, brewing under the motto ‘Created by Craftsmen’ from a 3,500 m² facility it opened in 2016. Internationally it’s best known as one of the pioneers of the pastry stout, via its cult Dessert In A Can series, along with a steady stream of hazy IPAs and fruited sours.
Its alcohol-free beers take the same craft-first approach: brewed in Oslo from water, barley malt, hops and yeast at full strength, then gently de-alcoholised — so the beer is made first and the alcohol removed after, rather than the brew being compromised from the start. Norway’s strict drinking culture (state alcohol monopoly, high duty) has made it an unexpectedly strong market for serious AF beer, and Amundsen is a big part of that.
The brewery’s growth has been remarkable by Nordic standards — from 1,500 hectolitres in 2016 to over 11,000 by 2020 — and it runs its own Bryggeri & Spiseri bar-restaurant in central Oslo, where the AF beers pour alongside the imperial stouts. For UK drinkers, Amundsen is one of the most reliable routes into Scandinavian craft without the Scandinavian prices.
