Why We Built Brew Zero, a Brewery Simulator Where the Beer Is Alcohol-Free

Brew Zero is our free brewery simulator, and it plays in your browser at unhopped.co.uk/brew-zero — no download, no sign-up. The setup: it’s June, you’ve got £500, a stockpot, a lock-up with the rent due weekly, and a theory that alcohol-free beer doesn’t have to be terrible. From there you develop recipes, brew on a 40-case kit, set your prices, chase awards and wholesale deals, and try to become a cult brewery before the overheads become a coroner’s report. Your brewery saves itself in your browser between visits, and there’s a weekly leaderboard for the competitive.

Honestly? Because I kept explaining the same thing in prose and nobody feels a margin squeeze through prose. Unhopped exists to review beer — 230+ alcohol-free beers and counting — and somewhere around the two-hundredth review I realised the most interesting story in this category isn’t any single can. It’s the absurd, admirable economics of the small breweries behind them. A game lets you inhabit that instead of reading about it. Also, and I want to be transparent here, running a pretend brewery is extremely good fun and I needed a reason.

The margins, mostly. In Brew Zero, upgrading your kit raises your rent, and going bust is one ambitious batch away — which is a cartoon version of something true. Brewing a beer to 0.5% or below either means specialist technique and equipment or expensive dealcoholisation, and the finished can then competes on price with global lager brands. Every small brewery in this category is doing hard things with thin cushions.

Ingredients matter disproportionately, too. With alcohol contributing no body or sweetness, the malt bill and hop choices carry everything — in the game as in reality, the difference between a 5.1 and an 8.4 is what you put in the tank. And reputation is the whole ballgame: small alcohol-free breweries live and die on word of mouth in a way big brands simply don’t. That’s not invented for the game — it’s what a decade of it looks like at Nirvana Brewery, the UK’s first dedicated alcohol-free brewery, or at Big Drop, who bet everything on 0.5% craft before it was a category. The game’s wholesale contracts, festival caskings and fickle critics are all affectionate exaggerations of things those breweries actually navigate.

Brewing games exist, but they’re paid, they need downloading, and the beer in them is resolutely alcoholic. As far as we can tell, Brew Zero is the only free browser-based brewery simulator dedicated to alcohol-free beer.
