Tasting notes and what to expect
HAWG is Mash Gang's flagship pale ale and one of the cult favourites in UK AF craft. Brewed at 0.5% ABV with six New World hop varieties stacked through the recipe, it's an unapologetically bold, American-pale-ale-shaped beer designed to satisfy hop-forward craft drinkers transitioning to alcohol-free.
Appearance and aroma: Hazy golden, soft white head. The aroma is huge — pink grapefruit, mango, guava, pine, fresh herbal-floral notes. Mash Gang lean hard into hop-forward expression, and HAWG is one of their cleanest demonstrations.
Palate and finish: Medium body, defined hop bitterness, juicy tropical and citrus fruit through the palate, finishing with lingering hop resin and a touch of pine. More hop-intense than most AF pale ales — HAWG drinks closer to a session IPA than a soft pale, and that's deliberate.
Food pairings: Excellent with foods that match the hop intensity — spicy curries, pulled pork, hot wings, sharp aged cheeses, charcuterie. HAWG holds up to bold flavours that would overwhelm a softer AF pale.
How it compares: Hoppier and more aromatic than Big Drop Pine Trail Pale Ale. Sharper-finishing than BrewDog Punk AF. Less aggressive than Nanny State (which is bigger, deeper, more bitter still). HAWG sits at the hop-extreme end of the everyday-drinkable AF pale ale category. See the alcohol-free pale ale hub or the Mash Gang brewery page.
