We Can Be Friends: UK alcohol-free craft, built on collaboration
We Can Be Friends is a UK brewery that does one thing only: modern alcohol-free beer at 0.5% ABV. Founded by Sam Ray, its stated aim is disarmingly direct — to make the best alcohol-free beer in the world — using modern brewing science and top-tier ingredients to produce beers intended to be indistinguishable from their full-strength cousins.
The name is the strategy. Rather than brewing alone, We Can Be Friends collaborates with some of the UK’s highest-rated craft breweries — names like Mash Gang, Track, Overtone and Vault City — to develop and produce its beers. It’s a very modern model: AF-only focus, borrowed brewing muscle, playful branding, and a release schedule that behaves more like a hyped craft brewery than a traditional AF producer.
The collaborations reach beyond breweries, too — recent releases include a beer made with the Sober Boozer Club, the alcohol-free community founded by Ben Gibbs. It all adds up to a brewery that treats alcohol-free drinkers as craft beer’s most underserved audience rather than an afterthought — which is, of course, a sentiment we can get behind.
We Can Be Friends on Unhopped
Our three picks lean into the brewery’s mythology-tinged naming: Ghost Czech Pils, Zeus Lager and Hades Stout — a crisp pils, a clean lager and a dark stout that together cover a lot of ground for a young AF-only brewery. They sit alongside stablemates like Mash Gang at the creative end of UK alcohol-free.
