Tempest: from a Christchurch garage to the Scottish Borders

Tempest Brewing Co has one of the better origin stories in UK craft. Founders Gavin and Annika met working at a brewpub in Canada, settled in Annika’s native New Zealand, and Gavin — a chef by trade — began homebrewing in their Christchurch garage with local Kiwi hops. In early 2010 they brought that hop-obsessed sensibility to Scotland, setting up a ten-barrel brewery in a disused dairy in Kelso, before moving in 2015 to a purpose-built 30-hectolitre site at Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders, where the soft local water suits their style.

The chef’s instincts stuck: Tempest built its reputation on flavour-first brewing across everything from crisp lagers and sours to big IPAs and barrel-aged stouts, winning Scottish Brewery of the Year at the 2016 Scottish Beer Awards along the way. Its alcohol-free beers apply the same flavour-led approach to sub-0.5% brewing — and its Tweedbank taproom pours AF beer alongside the full-strength range.

Recognition followed the beer: RateBeer has ranked Tempest among the world’s top-100 breweries, exports reached as far as Singapore, and when Tweedbank’s railway station opened shortly after the brewery’s move, the Queen herself cut the ribbon just up the road. Not bad for an operation that started with a cobbled-together garage kit and a bag of Kiwi hops.

We list Sleight of Hand IPA and Face Hopper IPA — both unmistakably Tempest in their hop character — plus Lagerita, a lime-zested lager riff on the margarita. For more Scottish AF brewing, our best UK alcohol-free beers round-up has the wider picture.
