Left Handed Giant: a community-owned Bristol brewery

Left Handed Giant's story began in 2014, when Rich Poole walked into Small Bar in Bristol and handed some beer over to Bruce Gray and Jack Granger. That meeting started a brewing journey that began on a 200L kit through the back of Small Bar itself, then developed into a cuckoo brewery operation before LHG opened its own physical brewery in 2017. In 2019, the brewery raised more than £1 million from the local community via Crowdcube to build their Brewpub overlooking Bristol's floating harbour at Finzels Reach — what they describe as 'the beating heart' of the business.

A community-owned business

LHG is genuinely unusual in UK craft brewing: founder, employee, and community owned. The brewery has around 1,500 shareholders, with more than 80% of them in Bristol (BS postcodes). It's a structure that reflects both the Crowdcube origin of the brewpub and the brewery's strong Bristol-local identity — they're owned and operated by the people who work there, drink in their venues, and live in their neighbourhoods.

Scale and reach today

LHG now operates two brewing sites — St Philips Brewery (with an attached Tap Room) and the Finzels Reach Brewpub — producing around 7,000 hL of beer per year. Their beer is sold through independent pubs, bars and bottle shops, but the majority pours straight to tap through the Brewpub, the St Philips Tap Room, and the original spot at Small Bar where it all started. The brewery operates six premises across Bristol in total, including their bars Renato's and Small Bar.

Left Handed Giant's alcohol-free range

LHG runs a properly built-out alcohol-free range alongside their full-strength beers. The current line-up includes Run Free (AF IPA with citrus and pine), Nothing Ventured (AF West Coast Pale), and an AF Sicilian Lemon Radler designed as a refreshing summer beer. The whole range is vegan-friendly and brewed in Bristol — described by the brewery as using 'cutting-edge techniques to deliver bold flavour at a fraction of the percentage'.

Where to find Left Handed Giant alcohol-free

Direct from the LHG online shop, through their Bristol brewpub at Finzels Reach, the St Philips Tap Room, and Small Bar, with selected releases reaching specialist craft bottle shops nationally. Free UK shipping kicks in at the £50 mark.

Who Left Handed Giant alcohol-free is for

Best for: craft drinkers who care where their money goes — LHG's community ownership model means buying their beer is a different kind of transaction. Also strongly recommended for visitors to Bristol; a stop at the Finzels Reach Brewpub is genuinely one of the better craft beer experiences in the south-west.
