Brouwerij Huyghe: the home of Delirium

Brouwerij Huyghe is a family-owned Belgian brewery in Melle, East Flanders, known worldwide for Delirium Tremens — the strong golden ale with the pink elephant on the label. Founded in 1906, on a site where beer has been brewed since 1654, Huyghe is the oldest active brewery near Ghent.

On Unhopped, Huyghe is represented by Delirium Delirio, the alcohol-free member of the Delirium family — a 0.3% Belgian blonde that carries the range's playful character without the strength.

From village pilsner to global icon

Léon Huyghe bought an existing brewery in Melle in 1906, and the company took its present name in 1938. For decades its main beer was a pilsner, but Huyghe gradually shifted to the strong, characterful ales now thought of as typically Belgian. The turning point came in the late 1980s with Delirium Tremens — named, with a wink, after the medical term for alcohol withdrawal, and later crowned best beer in the world at an international championship.

The Delirium family

The pink elephant now adorns a whole range — Delirium Tremens, the darker Nocturnum and the fruit-driven Red — sold in dozens of countries and celebrated at the famous Delirium Café in Brussels. Huyghe remains family-run, four generations on.

The alcohol-free Delirium

Delirium Delirio is the alcohol-free blonde in the range. Pale gold with a gentle haze, it's fruity and lightly spiced with a soft malt body and a crisp finish — a 0.3% beer that keeps the Delirium personality intact. We featured it in our best Belgian alcohol-free beer guide.

Why Huyghe matters

Huyghe is proof that serious brewing heritage and genuine fun can coexist. A brewery over a century old, with a globally iconic flagship, turning its hand to alcohol-free beer is exactly the kind of pedigree the category benefits from.
