Amstel: an Amsterdam brewing classic

Amstel is one of the Netherlands' best-known beers, founded in Amsterdam in 1870 and named after the Amstel river — whose winter canal ice the early brewery used to cool its lager.

On Unhopped, Amstel is represented by Amstel 0.0, the alcohol-free version of its classic Dutch lager at 0.0% ABV.

Born by the Amstel

The Amstel brewery was founded on Amsterdam's Mauritskade on 11 June 1870 by Charles de Pesters and Johannes van Marwijk Kooy. Named after the nearby Amstel river, it stored ice cut from the city's canals in double-walled cellars to lager its Bavarian-style pilsner — cutting-edge cooling before modern refrigeration.

From Amsterdam to the world

Amstel grew into a major exporter and a household name, before merging with its great rival Heineken in 1968. The original Amsterdam brewery closed in the early 1980s, with production moving to Heineken's Zoeterwoude site, and Amstel is now sold around the world.

The alcohol-free Amstel

Amstel 0.0 brings the brand's clean, easy-drinking Dutch lager character to 0.0% ABV — a crisp, refreshing alcohol-free option.

Why Amstel matters

A genuine Amsterdam classic with over 150 years of history, Amstel is one of the most recognisable names to go alcohol-free.
