Madrí Excepcional 0.0 Review: Built for the Garden BBQ
Published June 2026 · 5-minute read · by Rich, founder of Unhopped

A barbecue has a rhythm to it. Someone arrives early to light the coals, people drift into the garden, the food comes in waves, and the afternoon stretches happily into evening. The beer for that occasion needs to be cold, crisp and endlessly drinkable — and not the thing that ends the day early. Madrí Excepcional 0.0 fits the slot neatly.

Madrí Excepcional launched in 2020 and quickly became one of the biggest lager brands in the UK, marketed as ‘el alma de Madrid’ — the soul of Madrid. Worth being clear about one thing: despite the Spanish name and styling, Madrí is brewed in the UK by Molson Coors, in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, with its recipe developed in collaboration with the Spanish brewery La Sagra near Madrid. It’s a Madrid-inspired lager rather than a Spanish import — and on its own terms, a very good one.
The 0.0% version arrived in 2025, using modern de-alcoholisation to keep the character of the original. In Molson Coors’ own consumer testing it was preferred to other zero-alcohol world lagers on taste and mouthfeel — and on the evidence of a glass in the sun, that’s a fair shout.
Madrí Excepcional 0.0 at a summer barbecue
Grilled food wants a crisp, clean lager, and that’s exactly Madrí’s lane. It pours pale golden with a bright white head, smells of soft cereal malt and gentle hops, and drinks smooth and refreshing with just enough bitterness to reset your palate between bites. Burgers, chicken, sausages, halloumi, a plate of tapas — it handles all of them without getting in the way.
And because it’s 0.0%, it changes the shape of the day for the better. The host can actually enjoy the barbecue they’re running; the designated driver isn’t stuck on cola; everyone can have a cold beer in hand from the first round to the last and still feel sharp at the end of it. That’s a genuinely nice way to spend an afternoon.
What does Madrí Excepcional 0.0 taste like?
Pale gold with a clean white head. The aroma is light and inviting — cereal malt with a touch of hops. On the palate it’s smooth and well-rounded, a little malt sweetness balanced by mild bitterness, finishing crisp and dry. A modern European-style lager done properly: not heavy, not watery, easy to drink by the pint. Serve it ice-cold in a tall glass.
Is Madrí Excepcional 0.0 worth buying?
For sunny-day drinking and food, yes. It’s one of the more convincing mainstream 0.0% lagers — crisp, balanced and properly refreshing — and it scratches exactly the itch a barbecue creates. If you like the full-strength Madrí, the 0.0 is about as close as the category gets.
