Stiegl is Austria's largest privately owned brewery and one of the oldest in the world — its origins trace to a Salzburg brewhouse first recorded in 1492, the same year Columbus crossed the Atlantic. The house by the steps

The name Stiegl comes from the German for ‘small steps’ — a flight of stairs beside the original brewhouse in Salzburg's old town, where brewing water was once fetched from the city canal. First documented on 16 June 1492, the brewery grew over the centuries to become Salzburg's biggest, and later Austria's leading private brewer.

Untersberg water and the Kiener family

Stiegl has been owned by the Kiener family for over 120 years and is led today by Dr Heinrich Dieter Kiener III. Its beers are built on pristine spring water from the Untersberg mountain — which makes up the bulk of every brew — alongside Austrian-grown hops and grains. The flagship Stiegl-Goldbräu took its name in 1912 from the gold medals the brewery's lager had won.
