Põhjala is the brewery from Tallinn that put Estonian craft brewing on the global map — Baltic-style stouts, Nordic-leaning experimentation, and a strong commitment to alcohol-free as a serious part of their range, not an afterthought.

Põhjala: Estonia's craft brewing ambassadors

Põhjala (meaning 'the North' in Estonian) was founded at the end of 2011 in Tallinn by four friends and home brewers. Their origin story isn't just about beer — by their own account, what brought them together was a shared love of good food, and the project began partly because the Estonian beer scene at the time didn't offer much that worked alongside the dinners and travels they were planning around food.

Early growth and brewing identity

A few months in, the team was joined by Chris Pilkington, a brewer they'd met during a short internship at BrewDog's original Fraserburgh brewery. The first Põhjala beer, Öö (an Imperial Baltic Porter), was released in early 2013, brewed in rented production facilities. In April 2014, Põhjala opened its first own brewery in Tallinn's Nõmme district — and in 2018 moved to its current state-of-the-art facility in the Noblessner area, a former shipyard in northern Tallinn, where it also opened its Tap Room.

What Põhjala is known for

The brewery is particularly celebrated for its imperial stouts, Baltic porters, and barrel-aged projects — including their 'Cellar Series' of long-aged limited releases and the 'Forest Series', which uses Nordic ingredients to create beers genuinely rooted in their geographic place. Põhjala today exports to more than 30 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. Head Brewmaster Martin Vahtra, who joined in 2018 and took over brewing leadership in 2023, has sharpened the brewery's focus while maintaining its small-batch, locally-anchored ethos.

Põhjala's alcohol-free range

Põhjala has a dedicated alcohol-free category in its production line-up, and the brewery has explicitly identified expanding its non-alcoholic range as a strategic priority — including investments in pasteurisation capacity specifically to support NA production. The result is a genuinely distinctive set of alcohol-free beers that reflect Põhjala's broader brewing identity rather than safe lager defaults.

Where to find Põhjala in the UK

Available through specialist craft import retailers and alcohol-free specialists including Dry Drinker, and through select London craft bottle shops. The brewery's UK presence has grown steadily as Põhjala's international reputation has built — they're now one of the most-imported craft breweries from the Baltic region.

Who Põhjala alcohol-free is for

Best for: craft drinkers curious about the Baltic and Scandinavian craft scene generally; anyone tired of NA lager-and-pale defaults wanting something genuinely different; fans of imperial stouts and barrel-aged styles looking for matching ambition in alcohol-free format. Põhjala is a strong gateway brewery into a region producing genuinely distinctive beer.

Frequently asked questions

How is Põhjala pronounced?
Roughly "PUR-hyala" — the õ is a distinct Estonian vowel sound, somewhere between a soft o and a u. Many UK retailers spell it "Pohjala" without the diacritic; both refer to the same brewery.
Is Põhjala only a stout brewery?
Not at all — they're best-known internationally for their Baltic imperial stouts, but their range covers IPAs, lagers, sours, and seasonal experimentals. Their alcohol-free range tends to focus on lighter styles (lagers, pale ales) where a small Nordic brewery can compete cleanly with the big AF specialists.
Where can I buy Põhjala beers in the UK?
UK alcohol-free specialists like Dry Drinker stock Põhjala's AF range, and selected craft bottle shops in London and the south-east carry Põhjala's full-strength imports. Direct-from-Estonia shipping is also available via the brewery's webshop.
What makes Põhjala different from other Estonian breweries?
Põhjala built its identity around Nordic — not just Estonian — craft brewing, taking influence from Scandinavian breweries as much as central European ones. The result is a recognisable house style: clean, pure ingredients, a willingness to push into unusual territory (smoke, juniper, sea-buckthorn), and a polished modern aesthetic.
