Brasserie d'Achouffe: the Ardennes gnome
Brasserie d'Achouffe is the Belgian brewery behind La Chouffe, the much-loved golden ale with the red-hooded gnome on the label. Founded in 1982 in the village of Achouffe deep in the Ardennes, it grew from a hobby in a cowshed into one of Belgium's most recognisable beer names.
On Unhopped, the brewery is represented by Chouffe Belgian Blonde, the alcohol-free version of La Chouffe at 0.4% ABV.
Born in a cowshed
Brothers-in-law Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts brewed their first batch — just 49 litres — on 27 August 1982, with very little money, in the heart of the Ardennes. The gnome mascot was chosen to stand out from the abbey-and-monk imagery of other Belgian beers, drawing instead on local Ardennes folklore.
From hobby to icon
La Chouffe — an 8% unfiltered Belgian blonde with coriander and fruity, spicy notes — turned the hobby into a full-time business and then a global one. In 2006 the brewery joined the Duvel Moortgat group, which expanded its reach while keeping brewing in Achouffe.
The alcohol-free Chouffe
Chouffe Belgian Blonde is the alcohol-free expression at 0.4% ABV — lightly hazy and golden, with the classic Chouffe yeast character of citrus, coriander and soft spice. We featured it in our best Belgian alcohol-free beer guide.
Why Achouffe matters
A beloved, characterful Belgian brewery bringing its signature blonde to the alcohol-free world is exactly the kind of pedigree that makes NA beer worth exploring.
