Tegernseer: a ducal Bavarian brewery
The Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee (Ducal Bavarian Brewery of Tegernsee) is a Bavarian brewery housed in a former Benedictine abbey on Lake Tegernsee, with documented brewing roots to 1675 and ownership by the royal Wittelsbach family since 1817.
On Unhopped, Tegernseer is represented by Tegernseer Hell Alkoholfrei, an alcohol-free version of its much-loved Bavarian helles at 0.0% ABV.
From monastery to ducal brewery
Tegernsee Abbey was founded in 746, and the brewery's documented history begins in 1675, when the abbot secured the rights to brew and sell beer. After the monastery was secularised, the Bavarian King Max I Joseph bought the estate in 1817, and it has remained in Wittelsbach (ducal) hands ever since — today managed by Duchess Maria Anna in Bavaria.
Bavarian beer-hall tradition
The brewery sits in the former abbey buildings on the lake, home to the famous Bräustüberl tavern — one of Bavaria's best-known beer halls. Its flagship Tegernseer Hell is a benchmark Bavarian pale lager, brewed to the Reinheitsgebot.
The alcohol-free helles
Tegernseer Hell Alkoholfrei brings that classic Bavarian helles character — soft, malty and clean — to 0.0% ABV.
Why Tegernseer matters
A royally-owned brewery in a lakeside abbey, with a beloved beer-hall and centuries of tradition, brings rare heritage to the alcohol-free helles category.
