Löwenbräu: a Munich Oktoberfest institution
Löwenbräu — ‘lion's brew’ — is one of Munich's great brewing names and one of just six breweries entitled to pour at Oktoberfest. Its roots in the city stretch back centuries, and its lion emblem is among the most recognisable in German beer.
On Unhopped, Löwenbräu is represented by Löwenbräu Alkoholfrei, an alcohol-free version of its classic Munich lager at 0.0% ABV.
Centuries of Munich brewing
Löwenbräu traditionally dates its origins to 1383, though documented brewing at its Löwengrube (‘lion's pit’) site in Munich goes back to the early 16th century, and the Löwenbräu name first appears in the city's records in the 1740s. The lion emblem is said to derive from a 17th-century fresco of Daniel in the lions' den. Under Georg Brey, who bought the brewery in 1818, it grew into Munich's largest by the 1860s.
An Oktoberfest mainstay
Löwenbräu is one of only six Munich breweries permitted to serve beer at Oktoberfest, where its festival tents — complete with a roaring mechanical lion — are among the most famous. Its beers are brewed in line with the Reinheitsgebot, the Bavarian purity law of 1516.
The alcohol-free Löwenbräu
Löwenbräu Alkoholfrei brings the brewery's classic Munich lager character to 0.0% ABV — a clean, golden, easy-drinking lager for any time you want the Bavarian beer-hall feeling without the alcohol.
Why Löwenbräu matters
Few names carry as much Munich beer history. As an Oktoberfest brewery with centuries of heritage, Löwenbräu brings genuine Bavarian pedigree to the alcohol-free shelf.
