Jever: Germany's famously dry pilsner
Friesisches Brauhaus zu Jever, founded in 1848 in the Frisian town of Jever near Germany's North Sea coast, is famous for one of the country's driest, most bitter pilsners — the unmistakable ‘Friesisch herb’ style.
On Unhopped, Jever is represented by Jever Fun, its alcohol-free pilsner at 0.5% ABV.
An innkeeper's brewery
The brewery was founded in 1848 by innkeeper Diedrich König, one of many small breweries in the region at the time — but König was convinced his beer was special. The exceptionally soft Frisian water lets Jever use more hops than most, giving its pilsner that signature crisp, assertive bitterness.
A pilsner pioneer
Jever has sold its beer under the Jever Pilsener name since 1934 and built a national reputation in the post-war pilsner boom, helped by its distinctive dark-green bottles. It is now part of the Radeberger Group.
The alcohol-free Jever
Jever Fun, launched in 1991, was one of Germany's first mass-market alcohol-free pilsners. Brewed by removing the alcohol, it keeps the brewery's clean, hop-forward, bitter character at 0.5% ABV.
Why Jever matters
For anyone who likes a properly dry, bitter pilsner, Jever Fun is one of the most characterful alcohol-free lagers around — from a brewery that has specialised in exactly that style for over 170 years.
